District School Closing Policy

Rochester Public School's Inclement Weather Guidelines

Unless there is an emergency, do not call the schools or administrative offices as all phone lines are needed to make calls to parent(s)/
guardian(s), bus companies and radio/television stations during school closings.

All school closing announcements will be placed prominently throughout the website and broadcast through the local media.

More Information

The decision to close schools is not an easy one. While dangerous situations must be avoided, we do not want children to miss school unnecessarily. Please be assured these decisions are made thoughtfully and with the best interest of children in mind.

Occasionally, however, it is necessary to modify the school day or close schools due to inclement weather. Doing so always causes some confusion. We can minimize this confusion with advance preparation and by following established procedures. The following information is provided to assist you in understanding what will happen should a decision be made to modify the school day or close school due to inclement weather conditions.

If schools are closed for the entire day:

All local radio stations will be notified of the decision to close schools by 6:00 a.m. whenever possible. Tune to one of the stations for an announcement. If there is no announcement, school will be held as usual.

School Age Child Care will be open at Northrop (child must be pre-registered).

All day and evening Community Education classes are cancelled.

If the school day begins one hour late with morning kindergarten:

All local radio stations will be notified of late start by 6:00 a.m. whenever possible. Tune to one of the stations for an announcement.

Buses will run where possible and will pick up students approximately one hour later than usual.

Morning kindergarten will be held and will be dismissed at the regular time.

There will be no morning School Age Child Care.

Community Education morning classes will not meet. Classes that begin at noon or after will be held.

If the school day begins two hours late with no morning kindergarten:

All local radio stations will be notified of late start by 6:00 a.m. whenever possible. Tune to one of the stations for an announcement.

Buses will run where possible and will pick up students approximately two hours later than usual.

There will be no morning kindergarten.

There will be no morning School Age Child Care.

Community Education morning classes will not meet. Classes that begin at noon or after will be held.

If schools are dismissed early:

If it is determined to be in the best interest for the safety of the children to dismiss school early, all local radio stations will be notified by 11:00 a.m. Listen to one of the stations for an announcement.

Buses will run where possible. If students cannot be bused home, parent(s)/guardian(s) will be notified.

Have a plan for your child if school is dismissed early. This plan should be on file with the classroom teacher and should include 2 or 3 options. If you live in a rural area or a street which is difficult to travel in bad weather, you may want to identify a family near the school where your child could go.

Unless there is an emergency, do not call the schools or administrative offices as all phone lines are needed to make calls to parent(s)/guardian(s), bus companies and radio stations.

There will be no afternoon School Age Child Care.

All Community Education classes are cancelled for the remiander of the day and evening.
