American Lit- Book Find & Research Help
AmLit Fun Fact:

Full Text:

To the Editor:

Russell Baker (column, Feb. 17) laments that the cover of "Moby Dick" "bore the name of an unknown scribbler named Melville, and it didn't sell beans."

Herman Melville's first two books sold so well that his wedding had to be moved to escape celebrity seekers. Readers did buy "Moby Dick," but most threw it down unfinished when they found it less fun than "Typee" and "Omoo." Forty years later, your newspaper in a tiny obituary identified Melville as author of "Typee."

Melville courted failure by writing a great book. His income and reputation never recovered. If Joan Collins managed to write a book as great as "Moby Dick," would Random House have found it unprintable? Too dense, you know.
