Leadership Program
Leadership in the Mayo High School bands takes on two distinct forms; the leadership council, largely related to marching band, and the leadership symposium, related to teaching all interested students about leadership.

Leadership Council:
The leadership council is a group of junior and senior band students who provide a leadership function during the marching band season.  These students are responsible for a variety of tasks and behaviors including but not limited to:
  • Helping facilitate rehearsals
  • Helping teach music and marching
  • Setting the example of an ideal marching band member
    • Attendance, attention to detail, preparation, work ethic, etc.
  • Making everyone feel welcome
  • Focusing on the positive and projecting a positive attitude during and outside of rehearsal
  • Be prepared and available answer member questions
  • Be someone a marching band member can count on

Band members apply to be a part of the leadership council in May of a given school year to serve over the summer and during the following school year.  After marching band, these duties diminish somewhat, but the intent is that the leadership council provides excellent leadership all year long.

Leadership Symposium:
The leadership symposium begins after the marching band season is over.  Symposium: a conference or meeting to discuss a particular subject.  The leadership symposium is open to all band students in grades 9 through 12.  It is a place to learn about leadership in the context of a band program.

Participation is simple, email Mr. Cole ( aacole@rochester.k12.mn.us ) to get on our mailing list.  We meet on Monday mornings at 7:15 am in the Mayo high school band room to discuss topics on leadership.  Leadership symposium members strive to exhibit leadership characteristics inside and outside of the Mayo high school band program.
