Ceramics and Sculpture 1

Mayo High School

Instructor – Ms. Quinn

Welcome to Ceramics and Sculpture1 at Mayo High School. In this class you will learn the basic fundamentals of ceramics which support the Minnesota Academic Standards in the Arts. I look forward to working with each of you as you develop and explore your creativity and artistic goals.

You will:

  • Design and construct 3-dimensional art forms working with clay or mixed media.
  • Be introduced to the potter’s wheel.
  • Create art work using slab, coil, and pinch construction methods and learn about surface design, glazing and firing.
  • Be introduced to ceramic and clay history, criticism, and aesthetic judgment.
  • You will explore styles of ceramic works from western and non-western cultures.

Assignments:  The majority of the assignments will be in the form of studio projects.  Attendance to class is crucial for success. Students are expected to participate every day.  Sufficient time will be given during class; however, for students who need extra time to work, there will be opportunities to finish projects.  Please check my schedule outside room 1-304 for open hours.

Grading:  Students will be graded on studio projects, written assignments, and classroom participation. Due to the hands-on nature of ceramics attendance to class is crucial for success.  if a student is absent, he or she will be expected to make up the studio time if they are absent.  Grades are standard based as demonstrated below.

The Minnesota Academic Standards in the Arts set the expectations for achievement in the arts. The standards are divided into four strands that foster the development of students’ artistic literacy. The strands are as follows:

1. Artistic Foundation

2. Artistic Process: Create or Make

3. Artistic Process: Perform or Present

4. Artistic Process: Respond or Critique                                                                                                                                                   Grading
