Course Objectives

Students will be involved in creative endeavors which support the National Academic Standards in the Arts. 

Creating, Producing, Responding, and Connecting will be our focus.

 Students will conceptualize, organize, produce, revise, and evaluate their works as well as the works of others.

 In Drawing & Painting I students will review basic design elements & principles using varied materials as available. Students will utilize the elements and principles of design as the tools and rules in creating art, view examples of other cultures and times to learn of the methods and styles used by others.  Students are challenged to express themselves through the visual arts.

 The visual arts provide a multitude of areas for growth and development.  Participation in the daily studio work is an important experience which will provide students with opportunities to communicate ideas, problem solve, enhance critical thinking skills, practice responsibility, and gain confidence while working in a cooperative studio with peers.

 While letter grades are our system in place, I prefer to evaluate students’ understanding of the standards set by the Minnesota Department of Education and the National Association of Art Educators. Skyward grading system does however require me to enter percentages. The following is currently my way of combining the two until Standards Referenced Grading becomes the norm.

 The standards are divided and numbered as Prioritized Learning (PL’s). Every assignment will be assessing one or more PL. The PL’s will be identified as PL#__ accordingly. Students are graded not on the finished work so much as their growth and understanding of the visual arts.

 Please keep in mind that the percentages will look very different in Skyward as we continue to adopt what we feel is a better way for teachers, students, parents, guardians, and stakeholders to know what a student knows and can do.
